Ruth is a trained teacher whose career transitioned into the provision of writing, editing and communications advice. As a publications executive at Standards New Zealand, Ruth wrote, edited, and designed resources and promotional material pertaining to Standards and was assistant editor of Standards magazine.

In 1994 Ruth was appointed as a Health Education Advisor in the then Public Health Commission, and subsequently in the Ministry of Health. In this national position, key tasks included management of contracts for the development and production of national health information resources, general writing and editing, and contributing to communications strategies.

Going freelance in 1998, Ruth contributes writing, editing, and communications services to a wide range of clients in both government and non-government organisations. On some projects, she works in tandem with an associate.

Ruth was a Community Member, Massey University (Wellington) Human Ethics Committee (April 2003-December 2006).
