Whilst serving in the British Fire Service and working in New Zealand in the Insurance industry Peter gained a wide experience in managing operational and ancillary staff, formulating and implementing a range of fire safety and loss control programmes, emergency plans and health and safety schemes.
Peter now works part time for Fire Risk Assessment Limited. The work includes inspecting fire suppression systems and alarm installations, writing company technical specifications for fire protection installations, health & safety programmes, and general risk management policies, providing detailed underwriters information packages and liaison with insurance underwriters, surveyors, risk management consultants and loss control engineers both here in New Zealand and overseas.
Risk management standards
For the last twenty years Peter has represented The Institution of Fire Engineers and the Insurance Brokers Association of New Zealand serving on a number of Fire industry Standards committees (eg, Sprinkler Committee, Fire Suppression Interpretation Committee, NZS4515, NZS4517, NZS4509, NZS4512, NZS4525, NZS4505 (Chair)) and is a member of the Standards Fire Industry Interpretation Group.
Peter has spent over 45 years in the field of fire safety and risk management both in New Zealand and overseas. He served for 21 years in the British Fire Service progressing through the ranks in a number of Brigades in Wales and England, finally retiring as an Assistant Divisional Officer in Greater Manchester Fire and Civil Defence Authority.
During his career as a full-time fire officer in the Fire Service Peter undertook many appointments in both operational, fire safety and specialist duties. Particular experience gained in the field of fire safety issuing Fire Precautions Act Fire Certificates for education facilities, commercial and industrial buildings within the City of Manchester and neighbouring authorities. Serving as a licensing officer covering both the Petroleum and Intoxicating Liquor Acts and as a liaison officer with the territorial Building Control Departments.
After leaving the UK Fire Service he worked several regulatory roles providing detailed fire risk assessments and carrying out inspections under the UK building codes. In 1992 Peter moved to New Zealand where he worked for Wellington Regional Council as a Regional Civil Defence Officer and then in the insurance industry as a Loss Control Engineer.
