Risk, risk assessment and risk management

This is a short, two-part note about generic and safety-related risk management, perhaps of special interest to New Zealand readers.

The recent WorkSafe NZ and MBIE “Health and Safety at Work Strategy 2018-2028” and the WorkSafe SafePlus document both refer to risk assessment and risk management but give little or no guidance on what risk, risk assessment and risk management are. They might seem like non-problems but when you start to dig you find that you always get more answers than there are people in the discussion! Personally, I use the international standard ISO31000 “Risk management – guidelines” for the definitions and for the guidance on how to assess and manage risk. What do you use?

For many years I’ve been running a two-day course “Understanding and managing risk”. It is generic but relates to process and occupational health and safety  and has been quite popular. This year I’ve been adding to it to include links to some International Standards Organization management system standards, including ISO45001 "Occupational health and safety management systems" (soon to be adopted in New Zealand) and SafePlus.

If you live in Christchurch or the wider Canterbury region I have an opportunity to run the course on 13th and 14th September. If you might be interested drop me an email at chris.peace@riskmgmt.co.nz and if there are enough people I’ll make the arrangements.

If you live elsewhere and are interested let me know.
